In preparing for the AGM, the Directors of HVHA invited a diversified group of guest speakers to come speak to us on a wide variety of issues which many of you have indicated are important to you. We are very pleased that almost everyone we invited accepted our invitation. Set out below is a list of the invited guests who will be attending:
Terry Pratt and Tori Meeks of the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts
Ralph and/or Steve Berezan of Hemlock Valley Resort/Berezan Management Ltd.
Robert Hasell, P. Eng., the CEO of Emil Anderson Construction
Fred Feistmann, P. Eng., the General Manager of Emil Anderson Construction, Maintenance Division
Barry Eastman, Operations Manager, Ministry of Transportation, Chilliwack Division
Marty McKinney, Fire Chief, Hemlock Valley Volunteer Fire Department
Peter Liljedahl, President, Hemlock Ski & Board Club

Randy Hawes, our MLA, was also invited to attend. He has been vacationing in Hawaii and immediately responded in the affirmative, pending availability on his calendar. We are awaiting his return.
The Directors of HVHA are quite excited about the wonderful group of speakers coming to our AGM. As Loch McJannett has indicated in his letter to you, the theme of this AGM is "Information, Information, Information". We hope that by the end of the AGM, we will all leave the meeting having learned a great deal of information from our guest speakers, as well as had many of our questions answered.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Thank you,
Directors, Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association

The following article can be found on the BCGEU website. It's very good news for all of us.
Highway workers reach tentative deal with Emil Anderson Maintenance
Jan 8 '08 - Job action averted in Fraser Valley, Canyon and Coquihalla - The BC Government and Service Employees' Union has reached a tentative settlement with highways contractor Emil Anderson Maintenance in the Fraser Valley service region.
Ratification votes will be held Thursday and Friday.
The tentative settlement includes salary increases of at least 3% in each year of a five year contract as well as improvements to sick benefits, training, auxiliary recall provisions and auxiliary wages.
"This tentative agreement offers real gains for our members," said BCGEU President George Heyman. "Through some hard bargaining and the assistance of mediator Vince Ready, we have established a provincial pattern on core issues and negotiated fair collective agreements with contractors in most parts of the province."
The 135 workers employed by Emil Anderson maintain more than 2,400 kilometres of roads and highways in the eastern Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon including Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Manning Park, Hope and Boston Bar. They also maintain the southern portion of the Coquihalla Highway.

G
reetings,
There is one thing which we are certain we can all agree upon ~ Hemlock Valley has snow ~ a great deal of snow ~ and it just keeps falling!
The snow conditions on the slopes of Hemlock Valley, as well as the cross country and snowshoeing tracks in and around the Village, could not be better. What a wonderful, splendid week this has been for all of us lucky enough to spend Christmas and the Holidays in this winter wonderland. (Surely it is the gem of the Lower Mainland and one which is oft-times overlooked.) The Directors of Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association could not be more pleased Hemlock Valley Resort opened to such wonderful snow conditions which happily have continued, non-stop, throughout the entire Holiday Season. We look forward to continue working with Hemlock Valley Resort in promoting our ski resort and the community as a whole.
Thank goodness Santa made it to Hemlock Valley late on the 24th! As usual, he was generous to a fault. It's good he had his trusty sleigh though, not to mention the much needed glow from Rudolph's nose, as Emil Anderson worked hard that night. They have continued to do so throughout the entire Holiday Season, working around the clock, often in blizzard conditions, trying their very best to keep up with what may become record snow fall amounts, as one weather system after another dumps powdery white stuff on the slopes and Village. They are most certainly to be commended, not only for the wonderful job they are doing on the roads leading up to and in and around the Village, but as well, for trying their utmost to keep driveway entrances clear. Thank you!
A big 'thank you' is extended as well to Carl Butler and his crew as they work around the community every day, plowing our driveways. With the amount of snow we are receiving it is an endless (and no doubt thankless) task. Aren't they doing a wonderful job!
Now for the news...
We are very pleased to inform you the details have now been finalized for the Annual General Meeting which will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 15808 - 104th Avenue, Surrey, BC. This is the same location as last year and as was also the case then, coffee service will be provided. The hotel is located at the corner of 104th Avenue and 158th Street.
We very much look forward to seeing you at the AGM on February 7, 2008. Your participation is important to us and we are excited to hear your thoughts and suggestions regarding what is important to you and in particular, how HVHA can help. Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association's goal is to continue moving forward in a positive, unbiased and neutral fashion, and in doing so, we hope to help not only our community as a whole, but each and every home and property owner who works and/or plays in and around Hemlock Valley.
We will soon be sending out the upcoming AGM documentation including the Agenda, Minutes from last year's AGM, the financial statements, and the nomination and proxy forms. Homeowners who are members of Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association will receive the documents via e-mail. This saves the Association a considerable amount of money in postage, photocopying and paper, and is much less labour intensive. Homeowners who are not yet members will have the documents sent to them by mail, however this year will be the last year where there is a paper mail out. Next year all documentation will be sent via e-mail. That we now have this ability is, of course, a major benefit to us, and is a result of the creation of our new website. We are very pleased because not only will it be very cost effective for our non-profit association, but it is also a 'green initiative', which is something HVHA feels strongly about.
Speaking of our new website, we would like to take this opportunity to warmly extend our gratitude and thanks for the overwhelmingly positive feedback Directors of HVHA have received from homeowners, (members and non-members alike), as well as from the public at large. We are very pleased. As previously mentioned, we welcome any ideas you may have on how we can make it even better.
With respect to information emails, the Directors of HVHA have decided that unless there is an emergency, an info-email will be sent out once every two weeks during the ski season. The purpose of this email will be to provide you with an information bulletin so that home and property owners will know, on a regular basis, what is happening 'up the hill'. If something of a more urgent nature occurs, you can be assured an additional email will be generated to inform you of the important news.
A couple of days ago members of Hemlock Ski & Board Club were seen collecting and organizing the beer, wine, spirits and pop bottles left at the garbage drop-off site. This is a very worthwhile fund raiser that helps the ski club in numerous ways which means, of course, that it helps our kids. What could be more worthwhile than that? We would like to remind you all to continue helping to promote Hemlock Ski & Board Club by donating your 'empties' from this Holiday Season instead of returning them to the LCB or grocery store. For those of you who may be unaware of the drop-off location, it is located to the left of the garbage bin on Laurel Road, which is right beside the Hemlock Valley Volunteer Fire Department (on the right). There is a covered wooden storage bin located there within which to place your empties. Thank you.
In closing, the Directors of Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association would like to extend their warmest wishes to one and all for 2008. May it be a New Year that is kind and generous to both you and yours, and most especially, may it be a very happy one.

A short note to let you know that thanks to the 'Snow Gods' (or perhaps just Mother Nature looking kindly down upon us), it has been snowing all week which means Hemlock Valley Resort is opening today. All 36 runs are open!
Snow has been accumulating all week and we are happy to report that in the last 48 hours alone, 56 cm of snow has fallen. The alpine depth is now 190 cm and at the Lodge there is 120 cm of snow. The next weather system is scheduled to arrive sometime late Friday at which time heavy snow is expected. It looks like there will be fantastic ski conditions at Hemlock Valley over the Holiday Season which is wonderful news for everyone.
When travelling up to Hemlock Valley, please remember to drive with care and have your chains with you at all times.
Happy Holidays (and Happy Skiing)!

Highway Workers 95% in favour of strike action in Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon
Dec. 4, 2007. "Highways workers in the Fraser Valley service area have given their bargaining committee an overwhelming strike mandate.
Last week members of the BCGEU employed by Emil Anderson Maintenance Company voted 95% in favour of strike action.
The 135 workers employed by Emil Anderson are responsible for maintaining more than 2,400 kilometres of roads and highways in the eastern Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon including Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Manning Park, Hope and Boston Bar.
'We have negotiated fair contracts with 23 highways contractors around the province,' said George Heyman, BCGEU President. 'Emil Anderson needs to come back to the table with a fair offer and accept the framework that was established with the help of mediator Vince Ready' ...
...
... In the event of job action BCGEU members will maintain essential service levels and respond to emergency situations in the region."

We will try to keep our 'ears to the ground' regarding the potential of a strike, and how it may impact our valley. You will note the article mentions the intention of the BCGEU members to maintain essential and emergency services. We view this as a good sign. Please let us know if you learn of any new developments in this matter and we will be sure to pass the information on.
Thank you.
Directors, HVHA
Head's Up Everyone...
On Saturday, December 8, 2007 Marty McKinney and Al Kisby were stopped on their way up the hill by Pete Handler, a Peace Officer for the Ministry of Transportation. He was checking for snow chains. Here's what Marty told our site Administrator later that afternoon: "He informed us that they were just issuing warnings at this time, but once the snow is on the ground, anyone caught without chains will receive a $135.00 fine". Please ensure you have your chains with you at all times. It would be a good idea to pass on this information to your renters as well, if you plan on renting out your cabin or condo at any time during the ski season. You know what they say ~ "Better to be pocket heavy than penny poor" (not to mention better safe than sorry)!
UPDATE ~ December 18, 2007
There have been a number of enquiries of the Hemlock Valley Volunteer Fire Department as to why one must carry chains. Please be advised this ruling was put in place by the Ministry of Transportation, not the fire department.
At the corner of Morris Valley Road and Hemlock Valley Road, at the base of the mountain, is a sign erected by the Ministry of Transportation which clearly states chains are mandatory. As many know, this sign has been in place for years.
We apologise for any confusion that may have resulted from the initial message.
Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association AGM
Recently a number of the Directors of HVHA have been approached by various homeowners, asking when the Hemlock Valley Homeowners Association AGM is going to take place. We are aware the AGM is normally held at the end of November, however we wanted to have the website up and running for a short while prior to the Annual General Meeting taking place. With Christmas fast approaching we thought the logical time for the meeting would be sometime in January. We are presently in the process of making the arrangements for the meeting and we will let you all know as soon as the details of the AGM have been finalized.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
Directors, HVHA
Happy New Year!
