Good On You!

Skiing, snowboarding and tubing at Hemlock Valley Resort during the Christmas week was wonderful – fresh powder snow every day, beautiful runs, and there were many people out enjoying the slopes or grabbing a bite to eat and chatting with friends at the Day Lodge.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lawrence Coagie, Manager of Outdoor Operations at Hemlock Valley, for recounting to one of our Directors something that took place the day before New Year’s Eve.

As sometimes happens, a problem unfortunately arose during the day – something was wrong with the yellow chair and it had stopped operating. When this happens, with guests to the slopes sitting on the chairlift chairs, efficient and quick rappelling of individuals from a chair is important.

Gordon Leech, a Captain on the Hemlock Valley Volunteer Fire Department, was skiing down one of the runs when he heard a call on his radio that the ‘yellow chair was down’. As a member of the fire department, he (and other members as well) always carries his radio with him, just for such an occasion. Thankfully Lawrence Coagie trains HVVFD members annually on how to rappel individuals from a chair lift.

Gord and Lawrence were assigned to one of the Towers for the Yellow Chair and working together, as a team, assisted all the skiers and boarders off the chairs, for that Tower and to the ground.  (It goes to show you, one never knows when good training will come in handy)…

When telling us this story, Lawrence could not emphasize enough how appreciative he was that Gord heard the call and came to the assistance of Hemlock Valley Resort.

We would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank not just Captain Leech, but also Lawrence Coagie, for his excellent training.  Their continued service and commitment to our community helps to keep us safe.

‘Now that’s what I’m talking about!’   Good on You, Gord and Lawrence!

Thank you to those who sent us suggestions for the "Good on You!" award.  They will be used in future editions.  (Please keep them coming!)
